The effect of folic acid upon the urinary excretion of the growth factor required by Leuconostoc citrovorum.

چکیده

In a previous study it was observed that Leuconostoc citrovorum 8081 failed to grow on a synthetic medium adequate for the growth of Leuconostoc mesenteroides P-60 and other common assay organisms (1). However, the addition to the medium of certain extracts from liver permitted excellent growth of L. citrovorum. Similarly, folic acid stimulated growth of the organism but the amounts necessary were very high (l).’ The present paper is concerned with the effects of folic acid upon the urinary excretion of the L. citrovorum factor by the rat.

Investigations on the biosynthesis of citrovorum factor by lactic acid bacteria.

Sauberlich and Baumann (1948) have reported that Leuconostoc citrovorum, strain 8081, failed to grow on a synthetic medium unless the medium was supplemented with an unidentified growth factor isolated from liver extracts, designated citrovorum factor. More recent reports in the literature (Sauberlich, 1949; Nichol and Welch, 1950a) point to the conversion of pteroylglutamic acid to citrovorum ...

The effect of ascorbic acid on the enzymatic formation of the citrovorum factor.

May and coworkers (l-3) demonstrated that the production of a scorbutic state in monkeys led to the development of a megaloblastic anemia, a condition which responded promptly to treatment with pteroylglutamic acid (PGA) or to very much smaller amounts of synthetic citrovorum factor (leucovorin or folinic acid-SF) .I It has been shown that the administration of ascorbic acid to normal human sub...

The nature of labile citrovorum factor in human urine.

The occurrence in human urine of a factor labile to heat and alkali which replaces citrovorum factor (CF; 5-formyl-5,6,7 ,%tetrahydrofolic acid; 5-formyl-THFA) in supporting the growth of Leuconostoc citrovorum, strain 8081 (Pediococcus sp. (1)) has been observed (2). This growth activity is lost upon autoclaving (pH 6.0 to 7.0) or during storage of urine at room temperature at pH 4.5 or above....

A study of the relation between folic acid and tissue ascorbic acid.

Many instances of a close relationship between folic acid and ascorbic acid have been reported in the literature. Johnson and Dana (1) have shown that ascorbic acid relieves many of the abnormalities noted in a folic acid deficiency syndrome. Woodruff and Darby (2) have reported that folic acid aids in correcting the abnormal tyrosine metabolism of the scorbutic guinea pig. Nichol and Welch (3,...
